Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-11-09  ughaibu: Any hypotheses about black's 26th move?

Fusilli: My guess is that against 26...Bb7 Black feared 27.Qg4+ as in the game, and after the trade of queens Black's e7 pawn looks too weak, and White will get on the seventh rank with Rc7, and Black looks really bad. So he figured he would be better off with white's e-pawn on e6, where he can capture it and get his knight out to play.
Aug-11-09  ughaibu: Sounds reasonable. I reckon he was in time trouble, as sacrificing the d-pawn doesn't make much sense without Bb7 as a follow up. My favourite idea is that he thought he was moving out of check with Kh8.

Fusilli: <ughaibu> Your suspicion is not entirely unreasonable either. Imagine if instead of 25...d4 Black "passes" and White plays 26.Qxd5+ Kh8 27.Qxa8?? Bb7 and Black wins. Maybe Kholmov was planning to set this up but somehow got confused in time trouble and played d4 instead of setting up the trap. But then playing Kh8 thinking he was in check would be a second confusion, and that sounds like too many for a GM.
Aug-13-09  ughaibu: You know what? 25....Kh8 looks quite enticing! For example 26.Qd4 Ne6 27.Qg4 Nf4 which appears to win the exchange.
