Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-10-05  beenthere240: Black must be tearing his hair out to lose a game like that to a player rated 200 points lower.
Aug-10-05  Shams: I believe a 200 point difference is supposed to indicate that the lower-rated player will win about 25% of the decisive games.
Aug-10-05  acirce: It would depend on how often there were decisive games, of course.
Aug-10-05  Shams: sure...maybe I read "score 25% of the points". I don't remember my source. At any rate, if you play offbeat openings you should expect to scalp a higher-rated player every once in a while.
Aug-10-05  acirce: Checked with the FIDE calculator, if the higher rated player gets 3.0/4 against a 200 points lower rated player he loses 0.4 points. So, yes, the lower rated player is expected to score slightly less than 25%.
Aug-10-05  MoonlitKnight: In fact, Alan Spice on the Welsh team actually scored 3.5/8 against 2300+ opposition, so he was having a good tournament.

fredthebear: One possible finish drops the Black knight with 33...Rc8 (interposing to deal w/the check) 34.Be7+ Kc7 35.Ra7+ Kb8 36.RxNd7 etc.
