Oct-30-23  mel gibson: I saw that after about 1 minute as the best move.

score for Black +5.67 depth 43.

Oct-30-23  Brenin: 31 ... Rd8 threatens Rd1+ while the White Q is busy guarding the R on b6, e.g. 32 Qxc2 Qxc2 33 Rxc2 Rxb6 wins a R, or 32 Rxc2 Rd1+ 33 Qf1 Qxc2 wins the Q (at least). Interposing 32 Qg3+ Kf7 only improves Black's position by protecting the R on e6. In the game, after this and then 33 Rxe6, why not simply 33 ... Rd1+, rather than the Q checks, which become relevant if 34 Kf2?
Oct-30-23  eaglewing: With 33 ... Rd1+ 34. Kf2 the white King could make it to e3, still a Queen and hopefully a perpetual.

With Qc5+ (and checks from c4/d4/d3/d2/xc1; if King early on 2nd row) it will be mate or at least a full Queen down. No hope at all in that line.

Oct-31-23  Brenin: <eaglewing>: After 33 ... Rd1+ 34 Kf2 Qc5+ 35 Ke2 Qc4+ 36 Ke3 (36 Kf2 Qd4+ 37 Ke2 Qd2 mate) Qd4+ 37 Kf4 Rxc1 Black has a clear win, e.g. 38 Kxf5 Qc5+ or 38 Rc6 Qd2+ 39 Kxf5 Qd7+, both winning the R. White can try 38 Re7+ Kxe7 39 Qg7+, but there is no perpetual check.
Oct-31-23  saturn2: Felt 33...Rd8 is deadly. Any white answer is hopeless. Rxe6 Qxc2 Rxc2 h4
Oct-31-23  eaglewing: Sure, it is lost. 'hopefully a perpetual' translates to looking for a 'swindle'. You know 'Chess for Tigers', don't you? A swindle could only work on the board in case of time pressure and/or carelessness, not here in analyzation mode.

Your question was 'why not simply 33 ... Rd1+'. Because Qc5 is better. Directly deadly. BTW, my attempt to swindle here (the losing result is granted; could only get a better result) would have been 38 Qh3, neither Kxf5, nor Rc6, nor Re7+.

As long as it is no mate, the white Queen isn't gone and the advantage is 'just' material advantage, then the final kill is not done. And yes, without time pressure this position should be resigned. On the other hand, 33. ... Rd1+ is not a kill. It is, or could be, to some small degree careless.

Korora: All I was able to figure out was that White's crow on b6 was a red herring.
