Aug-23-05  siggemannen: was the ending a draw after 48... Bxh4 draw or black wins?
Aug-23-05  Norman Glaides: I can only assume Lawrence's opening preparation consisted of reading Mondo's Times column this morning - it showed a game from the 2003 Staunton Memorial using same opening system. White's opponent? David Howell.

WannaBe: 33. ... Nh7 saves the piece, but Mr. Day did not move his knight. 34. Nc6 is a possibility then possibly Nd4? Mr. Day lost the knight in that sequence.
Aug-24-05  AgentRgent: <WannaBe: 34. Nc6 is a possibility then possibly Nd4? Mr. Day lost the knight in that sequence.> Is not the knight lost anyway? 34. Nc6 Bxc6 35. Bxc6 Rxc6
Aug-24-05  AgentRgent: <IM Day> 31. Nd5 looks better than Bd5 to me. Care to share any insight into why you chose the latter? Did you simply overlook 32...a5 ?

WannaBe: <AgentRgent> You are correct, I missed the Rook sitting there on c8. (Hate it when that happens. :-)

Eric Schiller: Lawrence will comment on all this after he gets back home. My quick analysis of the game while entering the moves showed the endgame as hopeless in any case. During the game, many of us expected it to go to B/N vs. K. That would have required precision at this time control (40/2, 20/1, 60/30!, g/15).

IMlday: White's plan, deviating from Speelman-Howell in the Times article, is something IM Geza Fuster used to play regularly in fast Toronto tournaments.
Howell defended excellently to reach a playable if slightly inferior 'hanging pawns' position--but he was way short of time. 26.b4-b5? was my stupid move strategically. Black gets a target at c3 and a PLAN which otherwise was his main problem. The endgame was long but inevitable: viz W: Kh1, Bf1 B: ph2, Bg3, Nf4. Without the B/f1 its stalemate, in reality the B/f1 must move and allow either Nh3 or Nd3 followed by Nf2 and the pawn queens.
