Jun-22-06  Knight13: Try 56...c5+!, which would make white harder to win the game.
Jan-25-07  glennfunk: I think he was afraid of losing his grip on the a pawn after 57 Kb5 (...Nd6+ 58 Kb6 ...) where the king is now well placed to promote the pawn IMHO. But you're right, c5+ would be a little less boring.
Nov-09-08  Barnt: Waitzkin's annotation for this game appears in a PC chess program. He notes the variation 56...c5+ as black's best defence, leading to a draw.
