Dec-30-23  mel gibson: Wow - I didn't even consider that move.

Stockfish 16 says:

17. .. Nxf5

(17. .. Nxf5 (1. ... Nxf5 2.Rg1 Bb7 3.cxb5 Rae8 4.Qe2 Kh8 5.0-0-0 c5 6.Rde1 cxd4 7.Kb1 Nxg3 8.fxg3 g6 9.Rgf1 Qxh3 10.Qh2 Qd7 11.a4 d3 12.Bxd3 Qe6 13.Qa2 Qg4 14.Qe2 Bg7 15.Nd4 Qxg3 16.Rxf8+ Rxf8 17.Rf1 Rxf1+ 18.Qxf1 h5 19.Nc6 h4 20.a5 h3 21.a6 Ba8 22.e5 dxe5 23.Kc2 Qg2+ 24.Kb3 e4) +2.93/47 634)

score for Black +2.93 depth 47.

Dec-30-23  Refused: Hum? The diffiulty algorithm seems off.

White is kinda threatening the e5 push. Bb7 is sorta the move I'd like to play, would be way more efective if there was no pawn on e4. That suggests:

17...Nxf5 the point is
a) 18.exf5 Bb7 is just awful for white. Black has opened up the position for the bishop pair. He will regain material along the long diagonal. The file has been opened up and white is in no shape or form ready to deal with that. That's just -+

b) turning down the sac doesn't strike me as great either. 18.Qd3 bxc4 is simply a non-starter and not working at all. c) 18.Qe2 Nxg3 19.fxg3 Bg4!! 20.Rf1 Qxh3 21.0-0-0 is horrible but might be white's best chance of getting his fists up. So that'd be my try as white.

ok let's try something. Here is the key position:

but we are solving for black, so let's turn it around.

Let's assess the position:

black is castled, he has the f, e, and possibly b files for his rooks. If he wants to complete his development, what is the best location for the Bc8? ..Bc7 is certainly an excellent candidate is it assists the Q in catching the Nf3 in a crossfire pin. The Qh5 is already in position attacking h3 and pressuring f3.

white's king is in the center and is under pressure to find safety, but his kingside formation is already under fire, and his light squares are weak (holes). White's LSB is on the opposite side of the board and unable to assist the weak k-side holes. Now..

black has move in hand (the initiative), so the question is..

How can black open up lines of attack to the white king and/or kingside?

Any ideas come to mind?

Instinctively, the first thing i saw was K in the center and ..Nxf5 opens the E file for Re8+. Blacks two bishops are powerful, and if white recaptures exf he's looking at double threats.

Yes but I saw that the White King could castle out of trouble so I looked for ways to use the pawns in the center. I didn't consider a Knight sac to do it.

After ..Nxf5 ef Re8+ white can't castle. But even better is ..Nxf5 ef Bb7 and there is the double threat; ..Re8+ and ..Bxf3 but the latter is the real problem.

< I didn't consider a Knight sac to do it. >

that's one of the great things about these puzzles and GOTD stuff. The games have lots of great ideas we wouldn't normally consider.

Interestingly enough, after 16...b5 Stockfish evals the position as perfectly equal after 17.Bb3 , but after white's Bc2 blacks eval jumps to to +2.70 and after 18.ef (SF Rg1) ..Bb7 it jumps to +3.17 and white goes down quickly thereafter.

anyway..

The take-away is.. Look for new things!

scormus: I can't claim to have got this one, despite 17 ... Nxf5. I picked that to set up ... Re8+. Then after W castled, I expected ... Qxh3 at some time. Didn't so much lose the plot, never really had it in the first place.

Yes - I didn't think of that lonely Knight on f3.

  chrisowen: Hi top xxx
Dec-30-23  King.Arthur.Brazil: My option from the beginning was the game line (since the rest seemed improvable): 17... Nxf5 18. exf5 Bb7! 19. d5, but I didn't want W to escape, so I go with: 19...Bc3+ 20. Nd2 Rae8+ 21. Kf1 Re2 22. Nb3 Rfe8 23. Rc1 Re1+ 24. Qxe1 Rxe1+ 25. Rxe1 Bxe1 26. Kxe1 bxc4 27. Nd2 Bxd5 28. Rh2 c3; but this line is not forced and doesn't seems B position is enough to win. Then, I give up and followed with 19... Bxa1 20. O-O bxc4 (since after 21. Qxa1 Qxf3 22. Rd1 Bxd5, W lose another quality). 21. Nd4 Qxd1 22. Rxd1 Bxd4 23. Rxd4 Rae8! (initially I though about 23... Ba6 but it is so passive). Now, 24. Rxc4 Re1+ 25. Kh2 Bxd5 with threat of 26. Rh1# or Bxc4 I stopped my analysis.

I looked to SF position given by: 17...Nxf5 18. Rg1 Bb7 19. cxb5 Rae8 20. Qe2. Nevertheless, now I follow with: Nxd4 21. Nxd4 Qxe2+ 22. Nxe2 Bxa1 It seems to me that B has a winning game. Or 21. Qc4+ Kh8 22. Nxd4 Rxe4+ 23. Kf1 Bxd4... B has several choices here, and it is hard to know which is best to win more quickly. I like B position.

17.cxb5 Nxg3 18.fxg3 Bg4-+
a) 19.hxg3 Qxh1+ is dead
b)19.Rxf1 Qxh3 is relatively best, but this just awful c)19.Kf2 Bxf3 doesn't end well for white 20.Qxf3 Bxd4+
