Cafferty and Taimanov, in The Soviet Championships, claim that 29.a6 could well have led to a win for White--a win that would have clinched the title for Yusupov. The main point is 29...bxa6 30.Qxf7+! Kxf7 31.Ne5+ and 32.Nxc6, as the queen is no longer protected.

There had been two off days before this last round game, but Yusupov had to spend both of them playing off four adjournments he had accumulated. This error was caused by fatigue as much as anything.
