Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-10-13  csmath: One game between Karpov and Gavrikov in 14....Qe6 line is missing from the database.

This game between Yusupov and Van Wely illustrates the battle between two leading experts in Grunfeld (at the time).

Some of the choices of Yusupov are rather strange to me while Van Wely defends straightforward. Eventually Van Wely makes impatient mistake

30.... Nd3?! [...Rb7 needed]
31.g3 a5?!
[it is difficult to calculate 31. ...Nb2 but it seems it leads to a defensible ending of bishop versus knight pawn down]

32.Bb6 Nb2?! [...a4 is better]
33.Rc2 Na4
34.Bxa5 Ra7? [this is a losing move in already difficult ending]

and after losing the second pawn the game was over even though it continues with more imprecisions.

It just goes to show richness of Grunfeld. Many times it requires solid ending play as well.

Aug-10-13  csmath: The topical variation here should be

16. ...cxd4

with white keeping somewhat better game.

The critical response for white in 16. ...e5 variation (as here) should be

17. d5 [as opposed to Yusupov's dxc5]

with the idea of playing d6 as opportunity arises (in case the black queen leaves the center of board)

It seems white keeps somewhat better chances and fairly safe game (if preferred). The variation leads to complex middlegame play as it is most of the times in Grunfeld.
