Honza Cervenka: Black's calculation failed badly here. Weakness of dark squares was fatal.
Feb-27-06  patzer2: Per fritz 8, Black missed an opportunity to turn the tables a bit with 34... Nc5! 35. Qc4 a4 36. Kb1 b3 37. cxb3 axb3 38. a3 Ra8 39. Be3 Ra4 40. Qb5 Re4 .

Of course with the weak Black position, as noted by Honza, I suspect White might have missed missed an earlier opportunity.

Feb-27-06  patzer2: The miscalculation to which Honza refers is 38...Bxb2+??

Instead 38... Qxe3! 39. Bxe3 Bxb2+
40. Kb1 Nc3+ 41. Kxb2 Nxd1+ 42. Kb3 Nxe3 43. Ka4 f6 44. gxf6 Kf7 45. Kxa5 Nxc2 46. Ba4 Ne3 47. Kxb4 Nxd5+ 48. Kb3 Kxf6 49. Bc6 Ke5! sets up a Knight Fork which gives Black a strong endgame advantage with winning chances.

Feb-27-06  patzer2: The mating attack set up with 40. Bf6! was the point of White's trap. Black has "won the Queen" with 38...Bxb2+?? but now must give up decisive material to prevent White's threatened Rh1 followed by Rh8#
Sep-28-09  WhiteRook48: namely, 41...Qc3+ after which 42 Kb1!! gets the easy win
