Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-25-06  trumbull0042: I really wonder what Kamsky was thinking when he played 5...d5?!. Was he banking on the move's shock value? Bacrot's win after that looks seamless.
Jan-25-06  trumbull0042: It is interesting that even after 10...O-O, White's knight on d4 is still safe.
Jan-25-06  alicefujimori: <trumbull0042>What are you talking about? 5...d5 is theory.
Jan-25-06  trumbull0042: <alicefujimori> If by "theory" you mean you've seen it before in books or elsewhere, I'll grant you that: Chessbase's online database reports 82 games with 5...d5 in that position (Chessgames.com's Opening Explorer on the other hand only has 1 game featuring that move). My understanding of "theory" however is the body of moves that, to the best of our knowledge, maintain equality or give an edge to the side making the move (Black in this case). 5...d5 in my opinion is not a good move. Black's Queen comes under immediate attack and serves no real purpose in the center. Black could have played 7...Qxg2, but 8. Be4 gives White a nicely placed bishop and Black has wasted time.
Jan-25-06  trumbull0042: Correction: 5...d5 is not featured in only 1 game on this site's Opening Explorer, but 13 games. It is the 10th most frequent move in that position, according to this site's Opening Explorer.
Jan-25-06  euripides: <trumbull> Like you, I was puzzled by 5...d5 and looked at the chessbase games. I don't think anyone above 2600 has played this move before in serious competition. I wonder whether Kamsky had prepared something new or whether he was simply trying to avoid more theoretical lines.
Jan-25-06  alicefujimori: <trumbull0042>NCO actually gives 5...d5 a "!?" and goes on to give a line in which Black sacrifices a pawn and gets some compensation in return. Although 5...d5 isn't thoroughly analyzed in NCO, and I do not doubt that it might be bad, it still does not change the fact that it is theory.
Jan-25-06  Ulhumbrus: Kamsky brought his Q out prematurely and on this occasion paid for doing so.
Jan-26-06  Georgie Dubb: What about 6.exd5 ♕xd5 7. ♘c3 ♕xg2 8.♗e4 ♕h3 9.♗f4 ♗a3 etc... losing a pawn and the initiative ?
Jan-26-06  euripides: It turns out that 7 Nc3 is very rare indeed and may have surprised Kamsky. After 7...Qxg2 8 Be4 Qh3 White should be looking at violent measures pretty quickly, with ideas of Nb5 and Nxe6 in the air. For instance, after <georgie>'s suggestion 9 Bf4 Ba3 I like the look of 10 Ncb5.
May-10-06  trumbull0042: I like the clarity of this ending, starting with 43. Qe6+.
