Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-03-06  refutor: <5.d3> apparently ponomariov was worried about nakamura being booked up.
Feb-03-06  Knight13: <refutor> Maybe. I gotta agree. Usually White plays 5. 0-0 here. So he's gotta be up to something when he played d3.
Feb-07-06  hintza: 5.d3 is becoming more popular, I think. Perhaps it is simply because White would rather play 5.d3 than the Anti-Marshall that is currently so common, by which I mean 5.0-0 Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 0-0 8.h3 [or 8.h4, which used to be the most common Anti-Marshall line].
Feb-08-06  trumbull0042: Here's what I think: Ponomariov simply didn't want to play the Open. People play d3 when they don't want to get into too many complications. As another example: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nf6, and White can avoid all the complications resulting from the Berlin by playing 4. d3 (boo) (as opposed to 4. O-O Nxe4 5. d4 etc.
Mar-02-06  hitman84: I feel white was better in the middlegame maybe Pono was content with a draw..
