Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-03-06  euripides: An interesting struggle. Cheparinov treats the 4...a6 Slav very much like an orthodox with the move a4 a6 inserted. Cheparinov's sacrifice of the a pawn looks surprising, but if 29 b3 Black can open the queen's side by 29...b5. Karjakin shows cool nerves as he advances his king into enemy fire. Perhaps Black always had enough counterplay to cope with White's positional attack.
Feb-03-06  aw1988: I could have sworn Black was lost, but apparently not..

Mateo: <euripides: Cheparinov's sacrifice of the a pawn looks surprising, but if 29 b3 Black can open the queen's side by 29...b5.> What a struggle! I was surprised too that White did not play 29. b3. Your suggestion looks to me interesting and leading to complicated variations. But I think that maybe Cheparinov did not defend his a pawn, just for the simple reason that this gives Black a tempo to play 29... Rh8, and White cannot invade with his Rook along the open file.
Feb-06-06  perulo90: 30.Rh7 cxd4 31.Ng4 Kg5 32.f4 Nxf4 33.exf4 Kxf4 34.Ra3 Bd7 35.Rf7! Kxg4 36.Bxg6 Kg5 37.Rg3+ Bg4 38.Bf5 Rf4 39.Rxg4+ Ke5 40.Kh7 with a little advantage for white =)
