Feb-17-06  Runemaster: The opening here is very strange - a reversed Halloween Gambit, where White's extra move (4.g3) is of no use to him. White never seemed to recover from the shock of the opening.

Gypsy: Cool. (I guess 26.Kg3 Qd3 ... wins easy enough.)
Feb-22-09  sfm: <Gypsy: guess 26.Kg3 Qd3 wins easy enough> You are right! But 26.-,Rf8 is even more nasty, e.g. 27.Qe2,Rde8. The lone royal couple has much too many obligations, (g4, f2) against the invading army.
Feb-25-19  rcs784: <Runemaster> White's extra move is not only "no use"--it actually hurts him considerably. In the regular Halloween Gambit (with colors reversed), the best square for Black's queen's knight to end up on is almost always g6; here, White doesn't have that luxury, which makes the reversed version quite a bit more playable. In fact, by far the most common response to this version is to simply return the piece with 7. Bg2.

I even once saw an early Carlsen game (which sadly doesn t appear to be in the CG.com database) where Magnus with the white pieces played 4. a3 in a Four Knights, losing a tempo just to provoke 4...g6 from Black, then went full Halloween with 5. Nxe5 and won brilliantly. Does anyone remember this game, by any chance?

Feb-25-19  rcs784: My apology--the game in question is in the database:
