Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-25-08  TheaN: My club's site has this game as an example of "long moves".

Credits goto Pieter de Groot (chesslaw analist). It's in Dutch, I'll give a brief translation.

<9. Karpov - Piket

See FEN 38.? and play 38.Kg2?! Ne3†.

Ta1xa7 zou spelen.>

In summary, Karpov had a major advantage with 38.Rxa7! Qxa7 39.Qxd4 (simplifying) Qxd4 40.Bxd4 . However, after 38.Kg2 Ne3† 1/2 1/2, spectators and analists questioned Karpov why he didn't play the move order: he answered: "with barely seconds on the clock I was afraid losing on time with the long move Ra1xa7."

What time pressure can do... such another example: Piket vs Karpov, 1999
