plang: 13..Qc6 (defending against the positional threat of e5; ie. if 14 e5..Nxe5) had been introduced in the draw Timman-Dreev 1998 Elista Olympiad. Timman had played 14 Bf4; 14 Qe2 was new. If 24..exf 25 Ba4 and White has attacking chances. With just seconds left on hos clock Sadler sacrificed a pawn with 39 h4; had Fressinet played 41..hxg 42 hxg..Be4 43 Ba4! the game would likely have ended in a draw. 46..Qg8? was the decisive mistake; after the stronger 46..Qf8 White would have had nothing better than repeating the position with 47 Qg6. Black's last chance was to play 51..Ba6 in order to meet 52 gxf with 52..Qh6 53 Bxe5..Qh4+ and it is not easy for White to escape the checks. If 54..Qxg6 55 Qxf8+..Kh7 56 Bg8+..Qxg8 57 Qh6#.
