Apr-29-06 | | Atking: Well played by Van Wely. He got an advantage from the opening and Magnus tried to counter. It 's possible that Magnus overestimated f file and outestimated c file with the exchange 14. ...BxNc3. But after 14. ...cxd5 15.Qd3 White looks a bit better. |

Apr-30-06 | | JordanKwiatek: Suprises me how clearly Van wely is the underdog. Magnus is on absolute fire though! Go Magnus Carlsen |

Apr-30-06 | | CapablancaFan: I'm surprised no one has said it yet, but Van Wely has Carlsen in virtual zugzswang. The king can't move, the knight can't move (because of a pin), if the queen moves it will be captured. Even if black plays 41...fxg3 42.e6! would be the response. This IS zugzwang! I'm sorry people, I like Magnus too, but he lost this one badly. Excellent play by Van Wely. |
|
Apr-30-06 | | technical draw: <Capafan> If 41...fxg3 then the simple 42.Rc6 puts an end to the conflict. |

Apr-30-06 | | Jarlaxle: Where is Carlsen from?

May-01-06 | | acirce: Very bad game by Carlsen. Outplayed right from the opening. |

Another example of a pin producing zugzwang, like the famous Alekhine vs Nimzowitsch San Remo 1930 game. |

 | | tamar: <I'm surprised no one has said it yet, but Van Wely has Carlsen in virtual zugzswang.> Virtual zugzwang maybe, but not zugzwang.
The definition of zugzwang is chiefly that the person whose turn it is to move would obtain a worse position having to move than were it his opponent's turn to move. (Hooper & Whyld) In the final position of this game, if Carlsen were able to pass, Van Wely would win even more easily by playing 41 Qd3 Pass 42 e6 than 41 Qd3 fxg 42 e6 |
|
May-02-06 | | technical draw: Again not 42.e6 but 42.Rc6 wins faster. |
|
May-02-06
 | | tamar: Hmm, 42 Rc6 is better. At least Van Wely can reflect on this game, where he showed
definite superiority.
The course of the match is eerily like Morphy's encounters in Europe. Early troubles, then no more losses. |

May-02-06 | | CapablancaFan: <technical draw> <Again not 42.e6 but 42.Rc6 wins faster.> You are right about Rc6, but e6 also wins. |
