Richard Taylor: This was a correspondence game -I would be be hard put to get Dive to cooperate like that OTB!! (Then and now).

When that was played I think he was busy he getting ready for International Chess...But a win is a win!!

Jonathan Sarfati: Unusual game. White could have exploited Black's premature 4 ... Bf5 with 5.cxd5 cxd5 6. Qb3 as per old games like Torre-Gotthilf, Moscow 1925. Black's best would be the dismal 6 ... Bc8, although Capablanca held on against Alekhine, London 1922.

In the game, Black seemed to get a comfortable game, but White gained a passed pawn and some nice play in the centre.

Richard Taylor: <Jonathan Sarfati> I have since attended lecture on game by Topalov as Black where he avoids tis (Qb3) by playing a6 first.

Thanks for your comment.

Richard Taylor: I was talking to that to my son today (as we played over a London Classic game) in relation to a game recently played (Carlsen-Nepo) where Nepo won (not because of the opening of course). The position looked a bit like this. So early on Black played Nh5 which on the face of it looks not so good but I suppose was an attempt to avoid e6 but he played it in any case.

But in the QGD (transposed to) I lost a similar game as Black (only a year or so ago) by that early Bf5 and Qb3 when I went wrong with Qc8.

I'm not talking about this specific position necessarily but similar, or quite similar positions.

Richard Taylor: It looks as though Black had a small advantage and where he looked bad a one stage was possibly better according to the machine here. However it was a complex position with pieces all over the place. Near the end I was winning. I think I was pretty optimistic in those days!

Really? I looked at it pretty quickly, but my sense was that black was straight-jacketed to a considerable degree for most of the game. I hated his setup, especially the premature 7...Rc8.

You did a nice demolition job in the end.

Richard Taylor: Thanks. It is not clear that this was a correspondence game. I played a couple of games about the time Russell became an IM he went over seas. Y

Yes, it appears Black is not so good. I think I evaluated that using an old Fritz or something.

Yes, White mostly had a lot more space. A rare example of things going well for me! I also beat IM Paul Garbett otb that year.
