Kibitzer's Corner
May-23-12  madlydeeply: ah yes. clearly white is winning. WHAT?? oh me little brain hurts. will one of you geniuses explain the final position please
May-24-12  Shams: Model-looking game from White against the Grunfeld.

<madlydeeply> Correspondence can be fun this way. Well, it's easy enough to see that neither the Ba2 nor the Rd6 may be taken:

i) <40...Qxa2> 41.h6+ Kg8 42.Qe5 f6 43.Qxe7 and 44.d8=Q

ii) <40...Bxd6> 41.h6+ Kg8 42.Qxd6 and White's threats include Qxb8.

Basically, White threatens to play his pawn to h6 and then gain the long diagonal for his Queen (Rd4 shielding first is an idea). This combined with the pawn on d7 is hard to deal with.

The line I'm having trouble with is 40...g5 but at the moment I like:

iii) <40...g5> 41.h6+ Kh8 42.Qe4! Bxd6 43.Rxd6 Qxa2 44.Qe5! f6 45.Rxf6 Rxf6 46.Qxb8+ Rf8 47.Qxf8+ Kxf8 48.d8=Q+ Kf7 49.Qd7+:

Who is better here? I think I like White. 50.Qg7+ is next.

May-24-12  Shams: Addendum, that Queen ending looks unnecessary. Instead:

iii) <40...g5> 41.h6+ Kh8 42.Qe3! looks strongest, keeping an eye on g5. Now 42...Bxd6? 43.Rxd6 or 42...Bd8 43.Qa7 Be7 44.Qxb8 Rxb8 45.d8=Q+ Rxd8 46.Rxd8+ Bf8 47.Re1 both look good.

May-24-12  madlydeeply: thanks shams!
May-24-12  Shams: No problem; hopefully one of those geniuses you mentioned will stop by. By the way, I see you've been here eight years, that's a good stint.
