Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-12-07  Whitehat1963: Beautiful mid- to late-in-the-week puzzle after 11...b4. Wonderful and deep attack!

Richard Taylor: This follows Smyslov-Keres Zurichh 1953. Modern main theory is mostly different. Here Smyslov played 12. e5 and eventually won using the central passed pawn but playing it over I wondered if 12. d5 was playable.

Using Komodo it seems the best choice here also. It may have been prepared using a computer if White knew what Black would or might play. But I suppose it is unlikely.

Richard Taylor: And this is indeed a game worthy of a puzzle or "game of the day"...

Actually Smyslov's 12. e5 is only slightly worse. Smyslov won the tournament. I suppose 12. d5 was tempting to him but he thought 12. e5 more logical. Perhaps easier to calculate and that is important in a tournment that is and did lead to him playing the World Championships. But it would be interesting to know if he ever annotated this....I think I have a book of his games I will look it up.
