Sep-23-16  optimal play: 21.Rd1? Bg4!

32...Rd7!

42...Re8!

Well, this game didn't evolve according to Dr Sarfati's intelligent design, but I wonder if 21.Rd1? was played with the intention of exchanging both rooks for the queen, or if Dr Sarfati had another plan in mind?

This game is from the 28th Chess Olympiad held in Thessaloniki (Greece) 1988, played on 23rd November, 10th round, board 2, between New Zealand (white) and Australia (black).

Australia won the round 2½-1½ although New Zealand finished two placings ahead of Australia in the overall standings at 38th (30 points) to 40th (29½ points) out of 107 teams.

Guy West finished with a score of 5/10 [+3/=4/-3] and Jonathan Sarfati with 6½/12 [+4/=5/-3]

Jonathan Sarfati: West is a stronger player. The Australian team was stronger than the NZ team, but thanks to the vagarities of the Swiss system, we finished ahead. Part of that was my swindling a draw against Kouatly in the last round after losing a N in the opening. Kouatly vs J Sarfati, 1988
Apr-29-20  optimal play: <Jonathan Sarfati> Okay, but what about my question?

Was 21.Rd1 played with the intention of exchanging both rooks for the queen, or did you have another plan in mind?

Or perhaps you don't remember?

You may take your time to respond. I'll check back in another couple of years.

fredthebear: <Jonathan Sarfati> has always been a straight shooter on this site that I know of. I'm glad he contributes here.

<optimal play: 21.Rd1? Bg4!> Perhaps JS accepts your evaluation, and feels no further explanation is necessary. Goading does not oblige a response. He humbly admitted that "West is a stronger player" and that should suffice.

Apr-29-20  optimal play: How was my comment goading?

Dr Sarfati and I have had extensive conversations previously on this site so I know that he is indeed a straight shooter.

I'm sure Dr Sarfati does not need you to speculate on his behalf.

Your comment added nothing and is entirely unnecessary.
