Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-05-09  YoungEd: Black does fine in this game, but I don't like the ♗ fianchetto on the queenside after the exchange of pawns on d5. Trenchard's 11th was a mistake, freeing Black's position.
Sep-25-18  sachistu: Remarkably, 28 years later White pursued the the same faulty placement of his King's Bishop and Black used the same strategy to win.

In Strasding-Apsenieks (Latvian Congress, 1926), Black played 13...a6 (instead of the immediate ...Ne5). The game went 14.b3 Ne5 15.Be2(?) Rad8 16.Nxe6 Qxe5 17.Bf3 Ne4! 18.Qc2 Ng5! 19.Be2 d4! 20.exd4 cxd4 21,Nd1 d3! 22.Bxd3 Nf3+! 23.gxf3 Qg5+ and White resigned.

After ...d3, the positions are almost the same except for the exchange of center pawns on d4 and the pawns on b3 and a6. Other than that, the piece placement is the same.

Exchanging Knights on move 15 followed by Ne2 was suggested as an improvement.

It appears that may have also been better in the Alapin game e.g. 14.Nxe5 Qxe5 15.Ne2, although this is not mentioned in the tournament book. The tournament book (Marco et al.) suggests 17.Be4 dxe4 18.Qe3 Rd6 with the threats of ...Ba6 and ...Rh6 when Black's game is preferable.
