Ron: It is a pity that an attacking player like Emory Tate missed a great shot: 21. Nxg7!

if after 21. Nxg7! Black plays Kxg7 then black will face the music: 22. Rxh7! Kg8 23. Bxc3 f6 24. Rg3 Rf7 25. gxf6+ Qg5 26. Rxg5+ Rg7 27. R(g5)xg7+ Kf8 28. Rh8 mate

A better alternative for black after 21. Nxg7! is 21. ... Qc5 but then play could go 22. Nf5! Rxc2 23. Qxc2 Qxc2 24. Kxc2 exf5 25. Rxh7+! Rc8+ 26. Kd1 with a huge advantange for white.

I would like to see other's comments as to if Emory Tate missed a great shot with 21. Nxg7

Jun-20-07  ounos: <if after 21. Nxg7! Black plays Kxg7 then black will face the music: 22. Rxh7!> The music starts will an illegal tone: 22. Rxh7 (there is a pawn in h2, if you mean the Rook in h1)

Nice game. But I don't understand White's 26. Rg2 move, it seems Re1 was in order.

Ron: Yikes, I set up the position for analysis incorrectly.

Alright, after 20 ... Rc3 White might do better to play 21. Bxc3. Play might go 21. ... bxc3 22. Kd1 Qb4 23. Re1 Bd8 24. Qf3 d5

Jun-26-07  pocketkings: tate should have taken the R-c3 and then start running. he probably forgot that Black can't really pawn storm the k-side
Jan-15-21  TheBish: Instead of 20...Rc3?!, the engine likes 20...e5, with a slight advantage for Black. As <pocketkings> said, White should have taken the rook, and then played proper defense, i.e. 21. Bxc3 bxc3 22. Re1 Qb4 23. Kb1 Rc8 24. Qe3. White doesn't have to worry about ...Qa3 as long as the c-pawn is vulnerable to capture.
Jan-15-21  TheBish: I think the reason Tate didn't follow this line, is he wanted to attack, not defend! Seems like he was hoping to somehow reactivate his bishop to attack g7. Did he see a phantom? The Phantom Menace after winning the Exchange? As the saying goes, the best way to refute a sacrifice is to accept it!
