Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-06-07  MaxxLange: Z Young sure got his money's worth playing up in the open section.

The position after 11...h6? would make a nice puzzle of the day. After 12. Nxe6, the knight cannont be taken of course. But I wonder if there was a better defense?

Jul-06-07  MaxxLange: If 13...Nxe5 14. Rxe5, and White mates after either 14...Qxe5 or 14...dxe5 with 15. Qxc6+ Bd7 and either 16. Nc7++ or 16. Qxd7++ (depending on Black's 14th move).

Would 12...Qb8 have held better?

I don't want to beat up on Z Young, who was playing someone nearly 600 points higher, but 11..h6 sure gets crushed. 11...Nc5 or something else was needed, it seems.

Jul-09-07  Chessmensch: Kavalek comments on this game in his July 9, 2007 Washington Post chess column. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dy...
Jul-10-07  MaxxLange: Kavalek recommends 11...e5 12 Nf5 Nc5, and says that Black has a playable game.

7...Qc7 is, apparently, not usually played. 7...Bd7 looks like the main line, but 7...Qb6 is also played.

Thanks for the link, <chessmensch>. I'm pleased that Kavalek noticed and published this nice miniature.

  An Englishman: Good Morning: Only game in the database with 10.Bxc6, but the move makes sense, because without preparation, ...Be7 runs into Bxe7,Kxe7.
