Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-22-07  Gnappo: 12....Nc6 is a good move, that threatens c4 and then d4 (like Caruana played during the game). These moves are devasting because of the King is still exposed. So the right answer was 13.0-0 (...c4 14.Bc2 d4 15.exd4 Qxd4+ 16.Kh1 and the King is safe). Other inaccurances by Stange (14.Be2 and 17.Be3 were better).

Caruana missed the more brilliant ending 20...Nxg4 21.fxg3 Qe1+ 22.Kg2 Bb7+ 23.Kh3 (capturing the Rook). Anyway, Stange decided that 20...Bb7 was strong enough and resigned.

FSR: 4...b6 is very clever. It looks like it prepares an immediate ...Bb7, but in fact Caruana postpones that move until it's strong enough to induce immediate resignation.
