Mar-31-10  themindset: i dont want to sound like a negative nancy, but this is not worthy of game of the day.
Mar-31-10  Calculoso: <Perhaps Black needed to use his rooks more.> I lol'ed

Morten: Very strange game. The fact that it is a correspondence game just adds to the mystery.

Mar-31-10  sfm: Chess Bytes, 1968 issue:
"In '67 the player J.C.Torres, Argentina, complained to the UDAPA correspondence tournament organizers, that he still after 30 days had received no postcards with chess moves - socalled 'chess cards' - from any opponent. Big was his surprise when he was told that he had already played and lost 2 of his 3 games, in 10 and 13 moves.

Mr. Torres, a strong player, investigated matters further. It turned out that his 9 year old son who'd just learned the game had found the chess cards in the mail, and had replied to each of them with the best move he could find.

Mr. Torres objected, claiming that the result should be cancelled, but the tournament management decided that any player was responsible for correspondence brought to his house. 'So, next time I might bribe my opponents maid to make a silly move', Mr. Torres reportedly answered.

The UDAPA organizers regard the case as closed."

kevin86: An excellent exhibition of sleeping by black's rooks and knights;black led with his queen, like a boxer leading with his glass jaw.
Mar-31-10  scormus: <Calculoso ..... what B is trying to accomplish ....>

I'd restate it <..... what CG is trying to accomplish ...>

Actually I think its to provide some comic relief from the tough work we have this week honoring Vasily Smyslov

Once: <mworld: no pun at all>

I think it's a play on "one on one" and the fact that Juan junior was playing on behalf of Juan senior. I'd call that a pun. Not a rolling on the floor, wetting myself with uncontrollable mirth sort of joke, but a pun all the same.

Great explanation by <sfm> of what was really happening here. That gave me more of a laugh.

Mar-31-10  Riverbeast: There have been some weird Games Of The Day lately

I would call this "Juan bad move after another"

chrisowen: White is the don, Juan pushes the right buttons. Qh4's out of book, the teachings? Cast a neddy around whilst keeping one eye on the queen's gift as glee. Arranging black Juan Carlos experiences no shame n' manifests it until Bd3 which is tense. Grity energy for a kid, then the magic passes over.
