chancho: <The pleasure of this game for many is lying in the fact that kramnik was at the receiving end, destroyed quite badly.>

He lost a game. That happens to everyone from time to time. Do you guys think that Kramnik will go bonkers because of it? If he wins tomorrow, that should at least tell us that this loss had no adverse effect on him

Jan-22-08  walker: <The game went well for Topalov, who was able to spring a dramatic novelty, 12.Nxf7, discovered by his second Ivan Cheparinov three years ago and carefully preserved for an important occasion.> Did Chepa have the right to use this novelty?

Jan-22-08  walker: < acirce > What is the time in Sweden? You have to sleep. Or if you are not able, please, tell me what will be the best defence if one decline the Knight gambit? I don't have a clue...
Jan-22-08  KamikazeAttack: One cannot deny Topa success today. It was a very speical win because of the brilliance of the problems set for Kramnik and its executiion.

Topa and his team deserve credit.

However, it is only one game. The world championship wasn't won or lost today.

Fans should put things into perspective.

chancho: <whatthefat: Who would think such a pretty game could breed such mindless idiocy.>

lol I'm one of those patzers commenting on the game, but you definitely hit the nail on the head with your post.

Jan-22-08  Shams: <walker><Did Chepa have the right to use this novelty?>

a very good question. since he was paid to work as Topalov's second, I doubt it. but I'm not sure if that's the case forever.

Supposedly Kasparov retired with many, many novelties unsprung. A large chunk of these were no doubt found by people on his payroll. Are they allowed to use them? I'm curious about this aspect of top-level chess. We should cross-post this question to GM Keene.

Jan-22-08  tylerww: black is tied up in knots in this game. the complications make my brain explode
Jan-22-08  acirce: <and it seems it would be meaningless if not for the Queen sac 15 moves later in seemingly only slightly inferior position for black! what twilight zone is this? it simply seems that the queen sac had to be seen before the Knight sac.> Actually, he had to see all the way to the end of the universe before he even learned the rules of chess to begin with.
Jan-22-08  shach matov: < Actually, he had to see all the way to the end of the universe> If he sow all the possible 40 move lines ( only about the number of starts in it to the power of few billion)then he actually sow somewhat further than the end of the universe. That is : the twilight zone.
Jan-22-08  walker: <Shams> Would you please ask him? I am somewhat contoversial guy and he may not answer my question. I will ask an Intellectual property attorney who is a friend of mine and report here.
Jan-22-08  Hot Logic: This is a little like Marshall springing his gambit on Capablanca, except that Marshall lost. Anyway, good on Topalov, he managed to win against Kramnik - who only loses about 3 games a year.

I don't see why anyone would complain that there was something unfair about this victory or the reports of the victory - apart from the (quite understandable) lack of a handshake there was no bad sportsmanship involved in this game, so it should be viewed based on the quality of the chess alone.

I only had a cursory look at the game and I can say that the sac was really impressive. Cheparinov really does have potential.

jaime gallegos: good game by Topa, how many games like this has Kramnik done ever ? Thats why i respect the bulgarian, he has created wonderful games ( even losing it ) the last 15 years ... chestite nova gudina Topa !!!
Jan-22-08  KamikazeAttack: <( even losing it )>

Well different standards of appreciation. Say no more.

Jan-22-08  chessmoron: <how many games like this has Kramnik done ever ?>

Kramnik vs Morozevich, 2007

Jan-22-08  Bobsterman3000: Justice!

Thank God that Drawnik is no longer "champion" of anything. Anand is going to uncork even better novelties...

jaime gallegos: yeap Topa lost with Kasparov, Karpov and Shirov in memorable games ... Kramnik blundered against Deep Fritz ... thats different standard !
Jan-22-08  BlackNightmare: <square dance> thats because u can neither read or imagine, u r just a sad little fanboy whose pimp's butt got handed to him...must be a very sad day for you.. no dancing today i guess "lets whine and post garbage and pick fights" a la place...sweet dreams mofo.
Jan-22-08  Confuse: you'd think with all the hype here for topalov kramnik rivalry there'd be at least one person suggesting... chessboxing special: kramnik vs topalov!! : )

nice win for topalov here.

Jan-22-08  strobane: Shams: <walker><Did Chepa have the right to use this novelty?>

It seems ridiculous to think anyone has a "right" to a novelty. If a player discovers a novelty already played by someone else in his chessbase or in a book, OF COURSE he has the right to use it!

Jan-23-08  square dance: <blacknightmare> for your information i did all of the dancing im going to do for this decade when topalov hung his rook against kramnik in elista. you and any other "super uber" idiotic topalov fans that want to make a big deal out of this should remember that not too distant game.
Jan-23-08  littlefermat: Wow. This is pretty pathetic. Topalov won one game over Kramnik--it was bound to happen. It's not like he won the title...

An Englishman: Good Evening: Whatever the depth of preparation, this is still a mind-blowing game. I wonder what the silicon monsters thought of the Knight sac.
Jan-23-08  dexterious: As was said in another context, Topalov was not simply content to win this game. He wanted to grind Kramnik into liver-paste, and put him on toast!

Woah, Topalov smoked Kramnik like a cheap cigar, rode him like a rented mule...

Also, I think chessbase's description is quite understated. This is probably a serious contender for the brilliancy prize, and all they can muster is: 'oh, topalov sprang a novelty and kramnik missed obvious drawing chances to get into time trouble and lose'. This is the impression one gets from reading it.

Shame on chessbase!

Jan-23-08  square dance: somehow its not surprising that this game has attracted the finest kibitzing.
