Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-21-08  dtsherer: homma missed mate in one, i know he's still sick about it
Mar-27-08  Phoenix: Yes, I don't think he'll forget it any time soon.
Mar-27-08  dabearsrock1010: mutual chess blindness, its so hard to imagine finegold missing this that homa completely overlooks the possibility
Mar-27-08  Shams: please tell me this game score is wrong
Mar-27-08  micartouse: Weird, I saw part of this game in person. I walked by their table in the corner right before White played 19. b6 and I remember being totally perplexed. Both players looked very nervy and I think White was up on time.
May-03-24  EvanTheTerrible: Ouch, that's a painful miss.
May-03-24  EvanTheTerrible: I can't think of another example of a GM hanging mate in 1 in a classical game from a winning position.

Sally Simpson: There are a few examples of a GM missing a mate in one. I think Anand vs Ivanchuk, 1994 is the most surprising and quite frightening when we think what can happen to a human mind under pressure. If it can happen to Ivanchuk then it can happen to anyone.

Black to play. For once when someone here says they saw the winning move in a two seconds I believe them.

Although a blitz game Black had over a minute left on the clock and stared at this position for 25 seconds before playing 29...Qf4+ and eventually losing.

On the lower levels missing mates in one is more frequent. I have missed one by playing a move I thought was checkmate. Luckily I went on to win.
