Kibitzer's Corner
May-23-08  Mendrys: Simply disgraceful. On the last round of the US Championship the arbiters decided to do away with the no short draw rule allegedly to ensure that Friedel would receive his GM norm. Minutes after the announcement this little gem was uncorked and a draw agreed.

If you are going to have a pre-arranged draw couldn't you at least play it out past move 20? It really wouldn't fool anyone but it would be a little face saving especially since it was done on the last round minutes after the announcement.

This just goes to show what a bunch of amateurs (or professional putzes) run the USCF!

May-26-08  offtherook: I wouldn't call them "amateur." Amateur means "for the love of the game," something which is clearly lacking here.
Jul-01-08  Mendrys: Actually, I'm sure there are some really good people in the USCF but I think USCF as an organization is dysfunctional.

I could be wrong but could this be common practice in both instances, the wink wink nudge nudge draw to expedite someone getting their norm or major Chess Championships changing their rules in the middle of the tournament?

No disrespect intended to Friedel. It's only hearsay that the draw was prearranged. The position does look drawish and I'm sure he would have earned his norm soon enough anyway.

Jul-01-08  dx9293: I agree that waiving the rule before the last round is ridiculous. I have no problem with the "GM draw" (literally, in this case!), that happens all the time, but if I were one of the players chasing Shulman, I would be upset about it. Of course the likelihood is that a draw will be made, but announcing the sudden rule change guaranteed a quick draw.

I must say that I don't like all of these "Sofia rules" and the like, but if you have them in force for a tournament, don't change it during the event. Let Friedel earn the draw for his GM title (which would not have been hard in this case, since Shulman had no incentive to win).

Is the US that desperate for a new GM? They shouldn't be.

Aug-05-08  dumbgai: I'm not opposed to draws in a tournament, but I am opposed to changing the rules during a tournament in order to favor certain players. What was done here is simply unfair to everybody else competing in the tournament, as well as the fans. The final round of a major tournament should be the most exciting, as the best players would be matched against each other and several players would be in contention for the top prizes.

In this US Championship, the rule was clearly stated before the tournament that short draws would not be allowed, but for the last round they decide to ditch the rule because two players would clearly benefit from it. I'm not blaming either of the players, as there would have been ways for them to pre-arrange a non-short (maybe 30 moves) draw anyways, but the principle of changing the rules during competition is simply disgraceful.

Aug-05-08  shr0pshire: And if the rules were truly changed then I would recommend putting an asterisk next to the Friedel's GM title, like so, GM*.

Seems only fair if the rules were changed for him. And to me it doesn't matter if the he would have drawn Shulman under normal conditions. If the rules were changed, we never had the chance to find out, thus the need for an asterisk.
