Jun-10-08  benjinathan: I think that f7 was a mistake wasn't it? The White King has to stay where it is or near by. Even if Black trades Bs for the f pawn the Black King just sweeps up the others.

What am I missing?

Jun-10-08  deepthinker: No draw black has nothing after h5! Bxf7 then Bxe4 and the pawns will be fin whit will now send another e pawn down and have his own threat of g6 at anytime to tie doen blacks king.

Sneaky: If the bishops get traded, the White king can't stray too far from c3 otherwise ...b4 would win for Black. So White's offer to trade down into a K+P ending has to be carefully assessed every step of the way.
Jun-10-08  SCUBA diver: K-g7 would have been much better. ..

tamar: Is it a positional draw if Black just moves the King back and forth?
Jun-10-08  Gilmoy: Looks like Van Wely can just alternate Ke7-Kf8, and Carlsen's B is in the way of his own g-pawn, so he can't ever create a shield pair.

An Englishman: Should White play for split King side passers with h5 first and then g5?
Jun-10-08  ruyv: white just needs to threat to create a passed pawn on h column t force Black to change f for e and possibly g for c. After that the game is won for White
Jun-10-08  deepthinker: h5 first looks right then have his own threat of g5 and a passed h pawn to tie down blacks king.
Jun-10-08  Rawprawn: If he takes e4 with K he loses, doesn't he?
Jun-10-08  Tvangeste: 43.Ke4 Was an easy win for Carlsen... Wierd he missed that?!
Jun-10-08  severus6: g5! creates another passer
Jun-10-08  Wild Bill: <53.g5!> should win.
Jun-10-08  t3hPolak: <Rawprawn> most likely. He won't have the moves needed to deal with b4 ifhe strays too far.
Jun-10-08  severus6: but Carlsen's move works anyway
Jun-10-08  Ricardo2001: What about clocks?
Jun-10-08  deepthinker: <Scuba> Didnt matter if Kg7 still same moves for Carlsen. Just now when Bxe4 he has better chances to strke at c6.

  tamar: Carlsen had 53 h5 against both 52 Ke7 or 52 Kg7. I missed that.

Mateo: <deepthinker> You make think about Alain Delon.
Jun-10-08  deepthinker: now its a matter of <g-h-e VS h6>
Jun-10-08  whiteshark: <55.Bf5> looks strong. It reduces ♗e8's mobility.

Jun-10-08  Gilmoy: In fact, Carlsen's K can capture on e4, e.g. 53.f8=Q+ (just to drag Black's K from 6) Kxf8 54.Bxe4 Bxe4 55.Kxe4 b4 56.Kd3! and White's K is still in the box, while Black's K must dance with two passers.
Jun-10-08  hitman84: Thank you <chessgames>
Jun-10-08  severus6: e4-e5-e6 wins
Jun-10-08  Atking: Now Van Vely should resign.
