Jul-08-08  jmi: Another one hit wonder... sigh.
Jul-08-08  Hootey: Sensing a pawn blockade of epic proportions, White had no choice but to accept the draw. Perhaps he saw <2. d4 d5 3. c4 c5 4. f4 f5 5. g4 g5 6. h4 h5 7. b4 b5 8. a4 a5> where <9. Ke2!?> is met with <9...Ke7!>, and Black equalizes quite nicely.

<2. Ke2!?> is a decent try for the hypermodern WannaBe gambit, where White's King attempts to take control of the center, but Black simply transposes after <2...c5! 3. c4 b5 4. b4 a5 5. a4 h5 6. h4 <(6. g4?? Rh7! where the solidity of the g7 pawn is enough to call it a day)> g5 7. g4 f5 8. f4 d5! 9. d4 Ke7!> and we're left with our dead drawn position.

1/2-1/2

Jul-08-08  najdorfman: One of the very few flawless games of chess which I have ever seen! I'd be willing to wager that Ehlvest won the post-game drinking contest....
Jul-08-08  PinnedPiece: Maybe they were both in time trouble....
Jul-08-08  Jim Bartle: ...yes, the bar was closing in five minutes.
Jul-08-08  syracrophy: Yes. What can we expect from players that doesn't know to play to the end.

<Jim Bartle: ...yes, the bar was closing in five minutes.>

Now, I understand perfectly :-)

Jul-09-08  Granny O Doul: Is it true that Goichberg gave a $5000 "fighting" bonus to every other player in the tournament?
Jul-10-08  najdorfman: To Whom It May Concern:,
The real story behind this non-game is this: Ehlvest was upset because he strongly felt he was supposed to have the white pieces in this game. He raised a big fuss about it. Shabalov is a very easy-going fellow but can sometimes become rattled by what he regards as impolite behavior by others towards him. Even with a win in this game, neither player could have tied for first place in the tournament. Thus they ageed to a quick draw. They did not have drinks together afterwards.
Jul-12-08  PinnedPiece: <najdorfman: To Whom It May Concern:,>

That may be the truth, and thank you for it, but I like Jim Bartle's version better.
