Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-20-08  zluria: This was a long, protracted endgame which slowly got worse and worse for Black. At one point (after 44. ...h5) Rybka showed a +5 advantage for White. Apparently, white had several winning lines, but a determined defense saved the day for Gelfand.

Jimfromprovidence: This move was mentioned by <acirce> and others at the Tal Memorial kibitzing pages, but 55 Re7!! is one of the greatest moves I have never seen played.

There are many variations off of this line to annotate, but in any case it should win immediately. It is worth a Saturday /Sunday puzzle designation IMHO.

  Jimfromprovidence: Comments from Chessbase News:

"Here White had a cut-and-dry win: 55.Re7! and now for instance 55...Bg8 56.Nd7 Re4 57.Rg7 (57.Rxe4? Bh7 ) and the threat of Nf6 cannot be adaquately met. However Kamsky lets Gelfand off the hook: 55.Rxa7? Bg8 56.Re7. Now it is too late. 56...Rh4 57.Re8 Rd4 58.Re7 Rd6+ 59.Kh5 Bh7 60.Nd7 Rd1 61.Re8+ draw. A lucky escape for Boris Gelfand."

Aug-21-08  AnalyzeThis: That Nf6 and Rh7 idea is as old as the hills.... it's called the Arabian mate.

Jimfromprovidence: <AnalyzeThis> All I can say is that it's a very subtle, elegant position.

Try figuring our why moves like 55 Rd8+ Rg7, or Rc7 do not work while Re7 wins immediately.
