The most positive thing about moves like 1.a4 is their psychological value. Chesswise, the damage is limited to throwing away the advantage of the first move. But they can instill a feeling in the opponent that this outrageous crime must be punished, which can be a very dangerous attitude to have.

  Domdaniel: Very true. And if White can transpose into a position where a4 is useful -- there are several such positions, from the Ruy Lopez to the Benoni - then Black may find himself in difficulty.
