Aug-11-09  AgentRgent: Smeets seems to have pushed b4 just 1 move too soon. 17. Rfc1 and 18. b4 seem very difficult for black to deal with.

Just another example of how easy it can be for even very strong players to go wrong against Alekhine's Defense!

  JointheArmy: Wonderful technique by Short.
Aug-11-09  kurtrichards: A "mano a mano" here but in the end Short's classy handling of the Alekhine Defense prevailed.
Aug-12-09  Eisenheim: short showing that holding onto to a won exchange is not always the way to progress with positional play. nice work
Aug-13-09  luzhin: Premature moves with the b pawn seem to have been an affliction for Smeets in this game: 31.b5 gave Short an immediate passed pawn -- enough to convince Smeets to resign immediately.
Aug-14-09  TheSlid: Does 31. Kf2 hold the White position, here? I just don't see why White should be losing this game from there.
Aug-17-09  Wolfgang01: Another „Short“-game!!

Mateo: <TheSlid: Does 31. Kf2 hold the White position, here? I just don't see why White should be losing this game from there.> 31...Rc8 32.Bb3 Rc1 Black has an edge. There is no direct win but it will be very difficult for White to defend his 4 weak pawns...
