Sep-24-09  TheFocus: <ontocaustic> <Don't call Anatoli 'Tolya' like you are on a first-name basis with him> Uh, what is the big deal with that? What, we got to call these guys by their formal names now? Come back to reality.
Sep-24-09  TheFocus: Actually, I call him Tolya, he calls me Kolya and we sit around making rhymes at each other. Tolya is a fun guy.
Sep-24-09  Blunderdome: If 'Chucky' is OK (to list just one of the diminutive terms of endearments we give our favorite players), I think 'Tolya' should be fine.
Sep-25-09  ontocaustic: DOn't call ivanchuk 'chucky' and don't call 'anatoli' 'tolya' or you disrespect them.
Sep-25-09  SimonWebbsTiger: ontocaustic is one of those muppets who make discussion boards less fun or simply tries de-railing them. I believe the term is "troll" on other boards.

Vassily Ivanchuk, as I know from countless games with kibitzes relayed on FICS, is loved by many for his fighting spirit and creativity. The man emerged in the last years of the USSR and has been, post-91, one of the best GMs of his generation. We love Chucky - there is no disrespect at all, quite the opposite in fact!

Karpov has been called Tolya for decades.

What next? We shouldn't call Robert James "Bobby"?

Sep-25-09  gargle: "Mickey" Adams?
"Vishy" Anand?
Sep-25-09  Blunderdome: Not to mention "Hikki" Nakamura, "Maggie" Carlsen and "Bobo" Gelfand.
Sep-25-09  ontocaustic: LOL you don't even know waht a troll is. a troll is someone who disrupt because he not have reason to disrupt, i am suggesting some serious possibility about karpov's play because an 1800 does not jump automatic to 2600 and you start to call me names which is not unexpected because you call karpov 'tolya' and adams 'mickey' and carlsen maggie so it is no wonder yuo call me names and disrespect everyone
Sep-25-09  TheFocus: <oncaustic> Why do you consider Karpov to be no more than an 1800 player? Did you know that Karpov used to dominate in blitz chess the same way as Kasparov does now?
Sep-25-09  ontocaustic: I have seen karpov play and I have seen kasparow play and it is no contest between the two, it can be true if you want it to be that karpov was an ok blitz player but i'm talking about karpov and kasparov as they play now not 100 years ago or whatever
Sep-25-09  TheFocus: <ontaustic. It is still ridiculous to slight Karpov as an 1800 player. Maybe Karpov is not in your league. And your blitz rating is?
Sep-26-09  Abdooss: <ontocaustic> I am from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the far side of Asia.. FYI, we chessplayers have always call Karpov - Tolya and Adams - Mickey. It is meant in an affectionate way - no disrespect intended. That should not be an issue. Case closed?
Sep-26-09  ontocaustic: okay maybe you are right, if poeple so far away can call him those names perhaps i overeact
Sep-26-09  minasina: Did Karpov get some yoghurt during the game? :=)
Sep-26-09  Jim Bartle: And if so, what flavor?
Sep-26-09  minasina: ...well, maybe he needs to play Korchnoi for having yoghurt. http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/blog...
Sep-27-09  Ultra: Tolya and Chuckie can be called that and that is that. Those with an issue should spend more time navel gazing.

HeMateMe: Is it ok to refer to Tal as 'Misha'?
Sep-27-09  I Like Fish: every dog...

Sep-28-09  tranquil simplicity: First I'll dive into the proceedings with my opinion on certain things. Even though i will not overtly take sides I dare suggest that ' if one has a tight, cautious and fawning nature, it does not give them a mandate to patronise others with their puritanical views on how others ought to behave'. And now to my point: in this game i still love to see the dynamism and creativity of KASPY!"
Oct-23-09  blaibu: just saying that i think it's quite funny that one can suggest calling Karpov by the endearment "Tolya" to be offensive, when that person is clearly disrespecting Karpov by suggesting he is a "1800" player.

Classic and vintage "ONTOCAUSTIC"

Mar-26-13  leka: Ksparov had a good position but after 25...Queen f6?? was the losing move
May-16-17  The Kings Domain: Impressive game by Karpov. Had he played consistently this well he would have won the match.
