Oct-06-09  luzhin: Neat final move by Karjakin. After 33...Rxe5 34.fxe5 Bxe5+ 35.Kh1 it's promotion time.
Jun-28-12  Whitehat1963: Really clever tactics by Karjakin in this example of the Opening of the Day.

My immediate reaction was the mini-combination 30.Bb5+ Rxb5 31.Nd6+ Kxe7 32.Nxb5, leaving White a pawn ahead. Hardly a trivial win for you or me, but this is Karjakin we're talking about. There's even a cute mate after 30.Bb5+ Kf7 31.e8Q+ Nxe8 32.Bc4+ Kf8 33.Be7#.

But I'm not doing anything in particular tonight, so I fed the position into my Bozo 0.5 engine. It recommended <30.Kh2!!>, following up with 31.c3 and 32.b4. This drives the rook from the fifth rank, when Bb5+ becomes deadly. The purpose of the king move is to avoid ...Ra1+, which doesn't help Black very much but does save a half-point or so on the evaluation.

It seems Black is in sort of a quasi-zugzwang, and simply can't do much about the threat.
