Kibitzer's Corner
Nov-28-09  YouRang: Very instructive like-colored-bishops endgame, and well-played by Areshcenko, from move 36 forward.

The game reached this critical position after 52.Be4:

Black has his hands full, and then some, trying to prevent the white king from invading at d6, d5 or f6, and stopping the white bishop from attacking Ph7.

But black is essentially in zugzwang here. In the game, he played 52...c6, which gave the white bishop another target that ultimately won. But if 52...Bf7, then 53.h5! and then 53...gxh5 loses to 54.Bxh7 with the g-pawn winning. Or, if 52...Be8, then 53.hxg6 hxg6 54.Kd5 wins.

Nov-28-09  Paraconti: In playing through all the openings from Scotch to Bishop's Opening to Grunfeld one realizes the greatness of Kasparov. His influence is everywhere! I wonder what chess would be like if he hadn't come onto the scene.
Nov-29-09  notyetagm: Game Collection: Endgame lessons: same-colored bishops
