Jan-26-10  kellmano: Go on Vlad!
Jan-26-10  whiteshark: Thanks for chosing this one.
first, btw
Jan-26-10  whiteshark: Aargh, have to type faster next time...
Jan-26-10  Karpova: According to Rybka 3, there was already a critical moment after Kramnik's 17...exd5 (Rybka 3 prefers 17...Bb5 with an equal game). White missed 18.Rfd1 with ~+1).

Jan-26-10  BishopofBlunder: With the Shirov draw, a winner here would be tied for the lead. As exciting as that sounds though, I am betting on a draw here as well, just to keep pace and hope to pick up a win in the later rounds.

Domdaniel: 21...d3 looks safest. Carlsen has a dangerous attack otherwise, I think.
Jan-26-10  kellmano: I think most peolple who like to say 'first', do not also indulge in a comment.
Jan-26-10  AdrianP: I like Black *a lot* here.
Jan-26-10  Eyal: Computers and live annotators alike think that Carlsen might have missed a golden opportunity to "crush Kramnik like a bug" as he promised with <18.Rfd1!> instead of Bh3:

here, 18...d4 would run into 19.Qf5! with the idea of Nxd4 fiollowed by Be4, e.g. 19...Bd6 20.axb4 axb4 21.Nxd4! cxd4 22.Be4 Re8 23.Qxh7+ Kf8 24.Bd5 Ne5 25.f4; but with the bishop on h3 this option is gone.

Jan-26-10  Marmot PFL: Black's pawns won't win the beauty contest but white will lose some time getting his horse back into the game. Maybe black does not need to protect h7 if he can use that file after Rh8
Jan-26-10  Hesam7: <Eyal: Computers and live annotators alike think that Carlsen might have missed a golden opportunity to "crush Kramnik like a bug" as he promised>

When did he make this statement?

Jan-26-10  Mulyahnto: Looks like black will have to give back a pawn.
Jan-26-10  VargPOD: 21...Ne5, weird, I thought the same move. Either a coincidence or Kramnik plays patzer moves... ;)
Jan-26-10  Eyal: ...Another line would have been 18.Rfd1 d4 19.Qf5 Re8 20.Nxd4 cxd4 21.Rxd4 (not 21.Be4? Nf8 - but Rxd4 renews this threat by pinning the knight) 21...Qc7 22.Rxd7.

Domdaniel: < Looks like black will have to give back a pawn.> Or the exchange, after ...Ne5!?
Kramnik obviously wants that LSB gone, even if it costs him a rook.
Jan-26-10  Eyal: <Hesam7> Yesterday, in his facebook...
Jan-26-10  Intrepid Spiff: Go Carlsen!
Jan-26-10  Hesam7: <Eyal: <Hesam7> Yesterday, in his facebook...>

Hopefully it was a joke.

Jan-26-10  DrGridlock: Move 22 ...
which is more enticing to White: the exchange or a pawn?

  Domdaniel: Bxh7+ ... with Nf3-h4-f5 to follow?
Jan-26-10  Mulyahnto: Can white take the exchange here instead of h7 after NxN?
Jan-26-10  percyblakeney: 18. Rfd1 looked very strong, when Rybka 3 gives something as +1 in the middlegame it's usually quite good, but this doesn't look too dangerous for Kramnik going by how the engine lines turn out in the end.
Jan-26-10  bernieno: I guess 21...Nxf3 is a threat now. After 22. exf black's d-pawn looks very dangerous.
Jan-26-10  spinal pat: Carlsens 'statement' was indeed meant as a joke, if I remember correctly. I could only expect such statements for real from someone like Danaillov.
Jan-26-10  Eyal: <Hopefully it was a joke.>

Yes, of course. I don't think there's anything wrong with psyching yourself up with a bit of trash-talk like that, though some people would surely go on and on and on and on and on about it, like about how Nakamura terribly insulted Shirov by saying he probably shouldn't have played 1...c5, or how Kramnik terribly insulted Nakamura by his joke, etc.
