Dec-06-20  jerseybob: After 23 moves white's a pawn up but has a tiger by the tail; losing either the c-pawn or the h-pawn would be bad news, so he sacs the exchange to eliminate the bishop, but that doesn't solve his problems either. I'm struck by how black's assessment of the first phase of the game was superior to Botvinnik's. A simul to be sure, but a game black can be proud of nonetheless.

White's position looks winning before the exchange sac and even for some moves after it, so I'm not convinced that <black's assessment of the first phase of the game was superior to Botvinnik's>.

For example, I might try 23. Kg2 Bxc4 24. Nf3 Be6 25. Nh4. Black's position looks very hard to defend.

My numbering was off by one above, should have said 24. Kg2 Bxc4 25. Nf3 Be6 26. Nh4.

And the engine here thinks White has a strong advantage until at least move 30, suggesting 30. Rf1.

IMlday: A pleasant bit of nostalgia indeed. I watched this at the time. Fred was my doctor for twenty years before retiring to Malta. At the 1980 Malta Olympiad he volunteered as team doctor, driver and tour guide, a big factor in Canada's good result.
