Perhaps Black was concerned about White's sacking the bishop at f7 followed by a discovered or double check. Although I doubt that such an attack would be sound, the possibility seems to put 6...Ne3 in question, being that it opened the a2/g8 diagonal and led to a half-open f-file.

Sounder seems 6...Be7, and if 7.Qe2 (To inhibit Black from castling, owing to 8.Bxd5 Qxd5 9.Qxe7.), then 7...Be6. But I haven't checked an openings reference (either online or printed).
