Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-17-10  whiteshark: An intermediate mate thwarted black's plans.
Apr-10-20  Infohunter: Black was just about to win by double check and mate, but then...
Apr-10-20  Amarande: If 17 ... Qxd4+ instead, then 18 Qxd4 Nxd4 19 Bxf7+ Kg8 20 Bxg8+ Kxg8 21 Rd1 and Black will soon lose a piece, becoming a Rook down (to say nothing of the two pawns).

I'm not sure what mistake Black was hoping for though, even though 17 ... Nxd4 does threaten mate in one, the text mate (or even the mate in two by first taking on f7) is rather too obvious to miss.

  offramp: It's Good Friday, everyone!
Apr-10-20  faulty: Oh, Kermit...
Apr-10-20  goodevans: Black was clearly outside his opening prep by move 5.

And that in a National Championship!

scormus: Dunno what to say about the pun. Croak?
Apr-10-20  faulty: goodevans> the black player was 14 years old at the time. forgivable
Apr-10-20  ajile: The main thing that counts is Black won the d pawn!

eternaloptimist: <faulty> I understand that Thomas was 14 years old at the time of this game, but there are a lot of 14 year olds in the world who can play much better than this. He played horribly. 17...♕xd4+ would’ve prolonged the game for a good while longer as <Amarande> pointed out, but Green still would’ve had a +-. I don’t see why this game should be GOTD. The pun had potential, but I want to see a good quality game also...smh.
Apr-10-20  thegoodanarchist: < offramp: It's Good Friday, everyone!>

Amen to that!

I want to go to church on Easter, but I don't know if any will open.

Apr-10-20  thegoodanarchist: Based on the GOTD title I expected a 100-move draw.

Having played over the game, the pun makes more sense.

eternaloptimist: I second an amen to today being Good Friday! I love going to church also, but I guess I’ll have to watch a service online.
Apr-10-20  catlover: A third amen to Good Friday. Yes, online seems to be the way to do church for now.
