I wonder why Caruana didn't take the pawn with 32...Nxa3.

Instead, he played 32...Bd1 and after 33.Re3! it's a bad idea to take the pawn, e.g. 33...Nxa3?! 34.Rc3 <threatening Rc8#> Rd8 <forced> 35.Nd6 <threaten Pb7> b5 <35...b6 loses to 36.b4 Nc2 37.Rc7 Nxb4 38.Rxf7+ Kg8 39.Be6> 36.b4 Nc4 37.Nxb5 Ba4 38.Rxc4 Bxb5 39.Rc8 <and after exchanging rooks, it looks like white's extra pawn and further advanced pawns should be winning> [diagram]

Anyway, Caruana's problems seemed to start here. Nicely played game by Van Wely, though.

Aug-19-10  tonsillolith: Ouch! Beaten by Van Wely...that's gotta hurt.
