Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-26-24  SeanAzarin: 42 K-K2 is followed by 42... Q-Q8 mate. Lovely finish.
Jun-26-24  vonKrolock: <32...Kd7>

Here with 33.Qb7+ Kd6 34.Qb4+ etc White would ensure at least a draw

* As it was: Cute finish by <The Flying Dutch-Brazilianman>

Teyss: The title could be "Blunder over the South Seas" because 41.Be4? is mate in two whilst 41. Qc5+ leads to perpetual.

The pun: is it just a reference to the fact the game was played in New Zealand or is there another reference? AFAIK Herman van Riemsdijk 's nickname is not the Flying Dutchman.

Likewise with <41.Qc5+>:

Was this a 'must-win' situation that White passed up both these opportunities?

I was also curious as to the point of 35...Kc7 when the fairly obvious <35...Rf7> would have had White in all sorts of trouble:

It's not like 36.Ba4+ was such a terrible threat.

Entertaining game. Imaginative play from both players, particularly White. As for the pun, I'd say the early pawn 'storm' was little more than a 'fresh breeze' and far less remarkable a feature than White's various sacrifices.

Check It Out: Fun game, though not much of a pawnstrom, and I think the gusts were over the Eastern seas, technically.

  offramp: Tokyo pawnstorm warning.
Jun-26-24  Atking: The course of the game switches around move 23. more radical and decisive is 23.Qd2(!) Qa1+ 24.Bb1 Rh7 25.Qf4 Na2+ 26.Kd2! Qxb2+ 27.Ke1 Qxc3+ 28.Kf1 Black can't defend all threats xNf8; xRh7; then Bd7 eventually Na2 by Qa4 with a winning advantage.
Jun-27-24  vonKrolock: <Theys> Me too, I never even imagined that he should have a nick... (but I said <Brazilian> too ... )

<goodevans> It appears to have been an extreme time scramble ... (Herman Claudius doesn't particularly enjoy faster-paced forms Chess, but he does very well when he needs to...
