Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-22-10  PivotalAnorak: Pathetic play by Black. In order to mate, he must lure the White K to a corner of the same colour as his bishop. A 2300+ player not knowing that ? Unbelievable.
Sep-22-10  I play the Fred: I'm reminded here of GM David Norwood's comment from his book Learn From The Grandmasters WRT the N+B mate: "I was already a GM when someone showed me how to do it, so it can't be that essential"

Maybe GM Norwood hadn't played in an Olympiad to that point?

Phony Benoni: Knowing it and doing it are two entirely different things.

I once saw a 2200-player, annoyed because a lower-rated player wouldn't resign with a lone king against K+N+P, deliberately promote the pawn to a bishop--and then be unable to finish the mate before his clock ran out.

blazerdoodle: Laugh. The days of playing chess for fun are over.
Dec-04-10  technical draw: I have only played once in 45 years against B+N and King. (I had the lone King). I lost.

blazerdoodle: I wound up with B+N & King and against an opponent and offered him a draw on the spot. It is mind boggling.
Jul-03-11  swr: Starting with 117...Ba7!, Black can force mate on exactly the 134th move (!)

FSR: After driving White's king to a corner, Black showed that he didn't have the faintest idea how to win this. 98...Nc7+! 99.Kb8 Bc5 100.Kc8 Ba7! would have been a good start.
