Sep-28-10  twinlark: Young Fier did well for most of the game, basically holding his own against Polgar until White's 33...Rd2:

White now plays 34. Re1?? and loses spectacularly as in the game. But the natural 24. Qg6+ was enough to save the game:

The point is that the black queen now has to stay at home to stave off the perpetual.

34...Kh8 (34...Kg8 35. Nxh6+) 35.Ne3 Nd3 36.Rd1!:

36...Rxd1 (now 36...Rxb2 37. Rxd3 Qcd3 38...Qe8+ draws while 36...Rxf2+ is only good enough for the draw: 37. Kg1 Qh3 (any other move and 38. Rxd3 draws) 38. Qe8+) 37.Nxd1 Nc5 38.Ne3 and Black shall not pass, as the queen remains tied to the back ranks, eg: 38...Nxa4 39.Nc4 Qe6 40.Nxa5 Nxb2 41.Qf5!:

and the only way of maintaining guard on the Pb3 and the back rank is 41...Qg8. After 42. Nxc6 Nd3 43.Ne7 and White can force the perpetual. The alternative is to swap queens with 41...Qxf5 to try and win the endgame but after 42. exf5 Nxa4 43. Nxb3 Nxc3:

White can easily defend as the White king can get across to stop the passed pawn.

This wasn't a great game like her game against Bu, but credit to Polgar for taking instant advantage of Fier's mistake and helping her team to a 3-1 win in this match. Her live rating is 2692 after this game.

Sep-28-10  Jim Bartle: Nice summary.
