Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-21-15  optimal play: 16.Rd1 !

16...Bxf1 ? Black should have resisted the temptation to capture the Rook and instead got his Queen out of the way with 16...Qc7

17.Bxg7 ! 17...Qb6+ ?? 18.Bd4 !! White wins immediately!

Better for black would have been to give up the Queen and play 17...Bxg2 18.Rxd8 Rfxd8 19.Kxg2 Kxg7

And it’s still a fairly even game.

btw I noticed that the last few moves of this game differ slightly from the scoresheet as reported in the contemporary newspaper, The Argus (Melbourne, Vic.) issue Tuesday 24 April 1866 page 5, which gives the final moves as follows...

26... K. to K. B's 6th ; 27. Q. to K. Kt's 3rd (ch.) ; K. to his 5th ; 28. R. to Q's 4th (ch.) ; K. to his B's 4th ; And mates.

(26...Kf3 27.Qg3+ Ke4 28.Rd4+ Kf5 29.Qg5#)

Of course it is of no discernible difference since Tullidge should have resigned after 18.Bd4 anyway, but just for the record, Burns mated one move quicker than shown here.
