Nov-10-10  Marmot PFL: Seems that karjakin found a way to hold.
Nov-10-10  Marmot PFL: After hg f5-f6 white gets passed h pawn, but can't black stop this with f6?
Nov-10-10  shakespeare: @Marmot PFL: Seems that karjakin found a way to hold.

Better: it seems that Aronian find a way to let him draw

Nov-10-10  whiteshark: ♖+♙4:♖+♙3 endgames with extra d-pawn are rare: Game Collection: 08_extra passed d-pawn in R+4:3||

compared to extra a-/b- or c-pawn ...

tpstar: <chessgames.com> Thanks for the live broadcast. =)

I nominate <whiteshark> to be our R&P endgame resource! All in favor?

Nov-10-10  malthrope: <tpstar: <chessgames.com> Thanks for the live broadcast. =) I nominate <whiteshark> to be our R&P endgame resource! All in favor?>

I second that. :)

Motion passed.

By rook or by crook! ;)

  tarek1: Kh5 wins, no ?
Nov-10-10  Marmot PFL: Another 4-3 rook ending in Eljanov-Gelfand but there black has more weaknesses.
Nov-10-10  Marmot PFL: Kh5 Kf7 then Rh8+

  tarek1: For example 47. Kh5 Rh8+ 48.Kg6 Rxh4 49.d8Q+ Kxd8 50.Kxg7

looks decisive.

Nov-10-10  whiteshark: <tp + mal> Overpraised, I'm afraid. It's nice, though. :D
Nov-10-10  whiteshark: Unfortunately White can not infiltrate with his king via h-file due to ...Rh8+ (with a black king on f7)
Nov-10-10  malthrope: <whiteshark: <tp + mal> Overpraised, I'm afraid. It's nice, though. :D>

Good! Cause now it's time to go to the local bar and seal the deal with a beer and a rooksie! ;)

tarek1: I think the <49.d8Q+!!> pawn sac is the resource that makes this winning for White.
Nov-10-10  Kinghunt: But 47. Kh5 Kf7 and I don't think white can make progress.

  tarek1: <Kinghunt> You're right. I missed that.
Nov-10-10  Rawprawn: <Tarek1> That's how I see it. When the WK comes to g6 it's all over.
Nov-10-10  Rawprawn: h5 has to win doesn't it?
Nov-10-10  Kinghunt: <Rawprawn: h5 has to win doesn't it?>

Again, Kf7 and I don't think white can make progress.

Nov-10-10  shakespeare: @ Rawprawn: h5 has to win doesn't it?
definitely not - how to make progress after it - if at all Kh5 and hope that black takes with the rook :-)
Nov-10-10  SCUBA diver: There is nothing after 47. K-h5, K-f7, 48. R-b7, R-h8+ etc
Nov-10-10  Rawprawn: <Again, Kf7 and I don't think white can make progress.> Yes was just seeing that as answer to Kh5.
Nov-10-10  MyCatPlaysChess: I don't think the white king will ever reach g6... there is no triangulation to screw up black's coordination.
Nov-10-10  Ulhumbrus: <tarek1: I think the <49.d8Q+!!> pawn sac is the resource that makes this winning for White.> 47 Kh5 Rh8+ 48 Kg6 Rxh4 49 d7-d8/Q+ KxQ 50 Kxh7 looks promising for White, but on 50...Ke8 51 Kxf6 is this a technical win or a technical draw?
