Kibitzer's Corner
Jul-02-17  Retireborn: Score here matches CB Big 2002, while Informator ends the game after 70...Kf8, but I think it likely that Zaitsev did plug away in a drawn pawn endgame for a while.

With 31.g4! Zaitsev establishes his advantage, but he fails to follow up with 32.Rg1! Bf6 33.Bxf6 gxf6 34.gxf5 exf5 35.Rg8+!

The difference is that opening the g-file first allows the Rb6 to participate in the defence, so that 33.Rg1 Bf6 does not have the same impact.

The crisis occurs in moves 41-42; it would be very interesting to know if one of these moves was the sealed move. In Informator Gufeld gives 41.Qxh5 Bxh5 42.Bxe4 fxe4 43.Rxd8+ as winning for White, but if instead 41.Qxh5 Bxh5 42.Bxe4 Rxd2! 43.Bxd2 Rd6 44.Ba5 fxe4 45.Bxd8 Bf3+ it seems clear that Black is no worse.

However 42.Qf3? does lose and 42...h6 does throw away the win. Gufeld gives 42.Qf3 Qg4! 43.Qg2 Qh4 as winning, missing that 44.Rxd3! holds then; but in this line the surprising 43...Qh3! (Houdini) does indeed win.

Bob Wade had played this line earlier in the same tournament and scored a win in another messy game:-
