sachistu: This was a correspondence game (not 1st Hungarian chp, which did not happen until several years later). See Literary Digest, 1905, p80 where the score came from Charousek's manuscript, which Hoffer had obtained following Charousek's death. I'll submit a correction slip.
Jun-08-15  blackburne: Realmente si es el 1er Campeonato de Hungría, pero por correspondencia. Campeonato que por cierto ganó el propio Charousek.

sachistu: Hello <blackburne>. What source are you citing? My understanding is that the first Hungarian championship did not take place until 1906 in Gyor. Perhaps you have some knowledge of an 'unoffical' championship played by correspondence?
Feb-28-18  zanzibar: <sachistu> this game was also published contemporaneously as well, in <Budapesti Sakk-Szemle>.

It was indeed a corr game, from a tournament sponsored by the periodical. Beu was from <Kolozsvárott (Cluj-Napoca (en), Klausenburg (de))>

Feb-28-18  zanzibar: My source has <18.Qd2-c1>.

Who submitted this game, and what source was used?

Maybe <Literary Digest>?

https://archive.org/stream/literary...

I checked it, and indeed, it also has <18.Q -- B sq>.

Feb-28-18  zanzibar: This would be an example of 𝞊²-catch.
Mar-01-18  zanzibar: I was curious as to who Hoffer was in contact with at <The Literary Digest>, ACB v5 p169 provides this notice:

<It is our sad duty to announce the death of Dr. J. T. Wright, of Hulmeville, Pa., who died at the Episcopal Hospital in this city last Saturday after submitting to an operation earlier in the week. For a number of years Dr. Wright edited a chess column in the Literary Digest with such ability that his column attained an international reputation. His column was considered by many to have had the ablest corps of problem solvers of any chess publication in the country. Many an ambitious problem in tourney competition has been "cooked" by the expert readers of Dr. Wright's column. His acquaintance among chess players was a remarkably large one, and all will mourn his loss both as a friend and as an ardent and able exponent of chess. Dr. Wright was a regular attendant at the Mercantile Library Chess Association.>

It's a bit of a shame we can't just immediately open a page for the personage so I could put the note in the correct place - even worse that a biographer must have a game to get a page in the first place.
