Sally Simpson: This game differs from the one in Fairhurst's score book. His game is a 1.e4 e5 game and Fairhurst wins. (but also 37 moves! Kostic resigns a Queen v Rook ending. It is a totally different game) Possibly a different simul.

Fairhurst has only 1924 (no month, nor does he call it a simul) but it is between games in the same book dated February 1924 and April 1924.

I'll submit later the game we have.

MissScarlett: I don't think we should replace this score until we're surer of the circumstances. Your <1.e4 e5> game (I will assume the mention of 1924 was a simple error) may be a casual game played during the same visit as the simul. Finding a source for this game would be a good start.

  Sally Simpson: Hi Miss Scarlett,

Sorry 1922.

The Fairhurst games have a separate index with the players name, opening, result, what score book to find them in and what number of game inside that book. (in this case Book 1 game no 16.)

He has only one game v Borislav Kostic,
No exact date just 1922 but game 15 is dated Feb 1922 and game 17 is dated April 1922.

However a wee niggle. The index says the opening was 'Queens Pawn' not 'King pawn' The game in the book is below (a King pawn) and it states Fairhurst won. (not drawn as given here.)

He seems to have recorded every game he played including skittles and what he called 'training games' C.G. has 11 games v Bob Wade. Fairhurst has 27.

There are no games here of Craig Pritchett v Fairhurst. His books has 20 games. I was talking to Craig last night about these games. He said yes he played quite few training games with him.

He even has games v someone called 'Libby' adding they are aged 4 years and 11 months and he help them win! (it's a good game. I'll submit it then you and that lot in the Bio factory can spend many happy hours figuring out who 'Libby' is....Liberace was 3 in 1922 so it was not him - I actually checked.)

So if he played Kostic twice I'm surprised he has not got both games. But maybe he never recorded or felt no need to record a simul game (which is odd and if that is the case where did this queen pawn game come from? We need a source, I have one for the king pawn game.)

I won't be able to access a 1922 BCM till Monday. Is there a report about the simul in the Manchester papers possibly with the result saying he lost one.

This is the game in Fairhurst's book. The !! and the ! are given by Fairhurst in his score book. Someone else may be able to throw some light on it.

Kostich - Fairhurst Manchester 1922 (that is all it has in the scorebook.)

MissScarlett: Seems strange he would be so thorough but not include specific dates. Or is the Kostich game exceptional in that regard?

Sally Simpson: He did not date all his games just the name, sometimes the event and moves.

Most of the books appear to contain the actual score of the game as it was in progress (not copied in later from a score sheet.) so sometimes you get the heat of the battle notation.

What looks like squiggles as time control approaches and squares not identified correctly in descriptive. If a Rook can go to either f7 or c7 it is written as R-B7 and if both look plausible then work to do. (fortunately not too many of these.)

I'll see if I can get more background on this game.

I assume the simul game with Capa is there. Anything of interest?

Sally Simpson: Nothing interest. Just the moves.
