Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-27-14  optimal play: The ninth game played on 4th February 1875 in a match for the first to five wins (draws not counting).

Going into this game, Goldsmith led Fisher by 4 wins to 3 and thus only needed one more win for the match.

5.Qe2 previously only played by Wilhelm Steinitz

5...Bf5 Novelty in 1875

30.Rd6? was a missed opportunity by Fisher. 30.Rb4! is much better because if 30...Rb8 then 31.Rd6 Rb7 32.Ke2 Rd7 33.Rxc6+ Kb7 34.Rxb6+ axb6 35.Nc5+ Kc8 36.Nxd7 Kxd7 37.Rxb6 and white has a winning position.

Match score at the end of game 9 :-

0-0-1-1-0-0-1-½-½ (4/9) [+3 =2 -4] Fisher

1-1-0-0-1-1-0-½-½ (5/9) [+4 =2 -3] Goldsmith

And Goldsmith still only needs one more win to take the match.
